“Assiko My Love”: Anaïs C.’s Exploration of Gorée Island’s Musical Soul

In the enchanting gardens of the Gorée Island Town Hall, the solo photographic exhibition “Assiko mon amour” by the distinguished Guadeloupean artist Anaïs C. captivates the visitor. The Assiko stands as a poignant symbol of the cultural fusion that took place on Gorée Island during the era of slavery. Originating from regions that encompass present-day Congo, Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, and Nigeria, the Assiko represents a multifaceted cultural expression—it serves as both a musical instrument, a dance, and a distinctive sonic identity.

These musical traditions converged on this West African island, where amidst the challenges of enslavement, individuals from varied backgrounds not only shared but also creatively adapted these songs, fostering a collective spirit of endurance and cultural solidarity.

Assiko Sama Xol

The exhibition’s visual narrative is a poignant tribute to the meticulous artistry of Assiko. Anaïs C.’s photographs, imbued with a profound sense of detail, showcase the dexterous hands at work, the transformative fire tuning the drums, and the vibrant collective spirit of the artisans. These close-up shots reveal the tactile intimacy with the materials, highlighting the textures of wood and the intensity of flames. The images transcend mere documentation, offering a visceral experience that underscores the emotional and cultural significance of Assiko. Each photograph narrates a story of dedication, tradition, and the communal essence of this revered instrument.

Anaïs C. articulates a compelling artistic vision through her work, aiming to understand and depict the intergenerational transmission of Assiko traditions. Her objective is to reconnect the younger generation with their cultural heritage. The exhibition’s title, “Assiko sama xol” (Assiko, my love in Wolof), is a heartfelt homage to the deep affection that Dakar residents hold for both Gorée Island and Assiko music.

Spiritual Significance of Assiko

The spiritual resonance of Assiko is deeply rooted in African culture. These drums are not merely musical instruments but conduits for spiritual practice. Traditionally, instruments like the Assiko are used to invoke divine presence, communicate with ancestors, and connect with nature’s spirits. The drum’s rhythmic cadence fosters a profound sense of unity and harmony, enabling individuals to transcend the physical realm and attain a heightened state of consciousness.

Anaïs C.’s photographs capture these spiritual moments, where drummers and dancers seem to transcend into trance-like states, wholly immersed in the music’s rhythmic and spiritual power. The Assiko’s beats are imbued with a sacred message, each stroke a whisper to the divine, resonating with the spiritual essence of African musical traditions.

Anaïs C.’s Afro-descendant Experience

Anaïs C.’s identity as an Afro-descendant infuses her exploration of Assiko with a unique depth. Her artistic journey on Gorée Island—a site of profound historical significance for the African diaspora—allowed her to explore symbolic connections between her heritage and the island’s cultural practices. Through her art, she bridges her Caribbean roots with the African traditions that profoundly shape them.

Anaïs C. not only documents Gorée’s cultural heritage but also honors the shared history and spiritual connections uniting the African diaspora.

Residency and Collaboration

In May 2023, Anaïs C. embarked on a transformative residency on Gorée Island, supported by the Institut Français du Sénégal in Dakar. During this period, she engaged in a dynamic collaboration with the local Assiko ensemble of Gorée. This partnership culminated in a powerful, hybrid performance, blending the pulsating rhythms of Assiko, the traditional Guadeloupean dance (Gwoka), and the exuberant “gwo sirow” (syrup drums utilized in carnival parades). This cultural symphony is vividly captured in a series of evocative photographs that illuminate the intricate craftsmanship and collective effort inherent in creating the Assiko instruments.

Cultural Resilience and Global Harmony

“Assiko mon amour” by Anaïs C. transcends a mere exhibition; it is a celebration of cultural heritage, craftsmanship, spirituality, and the unifying power of music across continents. The exhibition offers the Gorée community a profound reflection on their cultural identity and its global resonance. Through her discerning lens, Anaïs C. immortalizes the rich tradition of Assiko, ensuring its legacy continues to inspire future generations. Her work underscores the deep connection between music, heritage, and identity within the African and Afro-descendant experience, reaffirming the enduring spiritual and cultural significance of Assiko. The exhibition is held from May 18th to June 18th 2024.
